An ordinary evening in an old Iwate farmhouse. The woman of the house brings a tray to the inner room — not for her children; they are asleep. It is the nightly offering to the other one. Tonight, for the first time in years, the child is letting herself be seen. The zashiki-warashi of Tōno Monogatari (1910) is the luck of a household made visible: a house that shelters her prospers, and the day she walks away, everything follows her out the door — the tale of the Magozaemon family ends with a stranger meeting two small girls on the road, and a household extinct within the season. Look closely: the top is still spinning, though she is motionless. There is one pair of small sandals too many at the threshold. And down the corridor, one shadow more than the lamp can explain. Being seen is either an honour or a goodbye, and the woman with the tray has stopped mid-step because she cannot yet tell which.
