A place literally named 'Black Eye' somehow became one of Tokyo's most upscale addresses — and nobody seems to find that even slightly strange. Meguro (目黒) carries this strange linguistic baggage with complete dignity, the way only a city as layered as Tokyo can pull off.
The name dates back to the Edo period, with competing theories about its origin. One popular explanation ties it to a dark-colored spring or muddy waters in the area, where 目 (me) may have referred to a natural landmark rather than a literal eye. Another theory connects it to Fudo Myoo, a fierce Buddhist deity enshrined at the famous Meguro Fudo temple — a temple that has anchored the neighborhood's spiritual identity for over a thousand years.
