Japan, 1979: a rumour moves through schoolyards faster than any newspaper — a woman at the bus stop, beautiful above the surgical mask, who stops children to ask one question. Am I pretty? Say no and it ends badly. Say yes and she removes the mask, shows what the mask was for, and asks again. The kuchisake-onna panic was real enough that schools organised group walks home; she is the purest urban legend Japan produced, a ghost story built out of politeness itself — because the trap is not her face, it is that she asks first, and every Japanese child is taught to answer kindly. Rendered in the black-and-white screentone of horror manga, her native medium: the sodium cone of the streetlight, the boy with one foot still on the pedal, the moths, and the question already asked.
