The mouth of a katana's scabbard is called the koiguchi — the carp's mouth — and the sword sits in it friction-tight, seated so it cannot slip free. Before anything can happen, the thumb presses the guard and eases the blade loose by exactly its own width. The gesture has a name, kōiguchi wo kiru, and everyone who has watched a samurai film knows it by heart even if they never learned the word: the close-up, the click, the inch of steel taking the light — the moment when nothing has happened yet and everything has already been decided.
