When rain falls out of a clear blue sky, Japanese has a word for it: kitsune no yomeiri — the fox wedding. Somewhere in the hills, the foxes are holding a bridal procession, and the sun-shower is their cover. The old tellings agree on the details: paper lanterns moving in single file where no road runs, a palanquin borne on shoulders, and the firm understanding that a human who follows the lights will not come back the same. This design paints the procession at full length in the muted mineral colours of the woodblock tradition — the foxes in formal wedding dress, lanterns lit in daylight, fine rain slanting through sunbeams, the line winding up the bamboo path and around a bend it does not come back from.
