When cherry blossom falls all at once, the Japanese call it hanafubuki — a blossom blizzard — and it is the most beloved three seconds of weather in the national calendar, the moment every film and commercial reaches for when it needs beauty and loss in the same frame. The petals here drift in a slow diagonal against gold leaf, in the manner of the Rinpa school, whose painters scattered blossoms across gold-ground screens four centuries before cinema borrowed the idea. The verse behind the design is attributed to the monk Ryōkan, spoken at his death: the falling blossoms, the ones remaining — they too are falling blossoms. Sakura is not beautiful although it falls. It is beautiful because it does.
