Sugamo is a district in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, with roots stretching back to the Edo period as a post-town along the old Nakasendo highway. The name likely derives from early geographical features near the Shakujii River area. Its central artery, Jizō-dōri Shopping Street, is named after the Buddhist guardian deity Jizō, whose red-bibbed statues watch over travelers and children.
